The Seventh Wisconsin did duty theretill dark when the Twenty-fourth Michigan and Sixth Wisconsin weresent down to take their places directly in front of that tree and theSalient, the left of the Twenty-fourth being about fifty feet from theenemys works. The Twenty-fourth had instructions to fire on eachside of that oak tree to prevent the enemys guns there from being ^„^J6r>^!,.
