Black hole and galaxy. Artwork of a black hole and a galaxy seen edge-on. A black hole is formed when the core of a sufficiently massive star collapses under its own weight. This increases its gravitational field to the point where, beyond a boundary known as the event horizon, nothing, not even light, can escape. Galaxies are large gravitationally bound groups of stars and other astronomical bodies that here has formed a disc shape seen edge-on. They can contain many billions of stars, with a supermassive black hole at their centre. Here, the dark areas are nebulae and dust lanes within the galaxy.
