Various pelvimeters are meant to make the same measure-ments, such as Lumley Earles, Lazarewitchs, which is similar inprinciple, and Van Huevels; the best and simplest, I think, isthat invented by Dr. Greenhalgh (Fig. 134). It consists of a mov-. Greenhalghs Pelvimeter DEFORMITIES OF THE PELVIS. 381 able rod, attached to a flexible band of metal which passes aroundthe palm of the examining hand. At the distal end of the rodis a curved portion, which passes over the radial edge of theindex finger. The examination is made in the usual way, and whenthe point of the finger is resting on the promontory of the sacrum, the rod is withdrawn until it is arrested by the posterior surface ofthe symphysis, the exact measurement of the diagonal conjugatebeing then read off on the scale. It is to be remembered that this procedure is useless in the slighter j degrees of contraction, in which the promontory of the sacrum cannotbe reached. Dr. Eamsbotham proposed to measure the conjugate byspreading out the index and middle fingers internally, the tip of oneresting on the promontory, the other behind the symphysis pubis;and then withdrawing them, in the same position, and measuring thedistance between them. This manoeuvre I believe to be imprac
