A rational materialistic definition of insanity and imbecility : with the medical jurisprudence of legal criminality, founded upon physiological, psychological and clinical observations . Science^ after a review of the whole says :— Legal opinion in regard to the test of insanity does not appearto have made so much progress in Canada as in some of the States ofAmerica, where the test of knowledge of right and wrong has beendeparted from in a marked manner. Dr. Howard, who has had longexperience of the insane, has done good service by ventilating moreadvanced views on the subject. We hesitate to express a decidedopinion on the irresponsibility of this particular prisoner, seeing thatseveral physicians on the spot differed from the conclusion arrived atby Dr. Howard, that he was insane and unaccountable. At the sametime the history of the case strongly suggests epilepsy, and the intem-perate habits were probably symptoms rather than causes of the lowmental condition present. The absence of motive for the crime is astriking feature of the case, as well as the prisoners indifference tothe verdict pronounced upon him. Fig. Plate firnari?Sul- Infpar Fis.
