Valencian Fallas Fiesta - Sculpture in Burriana Spain

Las Fallas is a traditional celebration held in commemoration of Saint Joseph in the Valencian Community in March each year. The falles and ninots (Valencian for puppets or dolls) are constructed to an agreed theme having a satirical jab at anything or anyone. They are an elaborate construction of paper and wax, wood and Styrofoam often towering up to five stories high. The falles and ninots are displayed in the streets during the four days leading up to the 19th March. At night on the 19th March all but one of the falles are burnt on the street. The one not burnt has been voted to be saved and these are kept in a museum. During the Fallas women and girls wear the traditional casal faller dress. Each dress is elaborately embroidered and covered in lace and costs around 1500€, sometimes more.
