Toadstools, late day, Paria Rimrocks, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments, Utah

Paria Rimrocks are an amazing collection of toadstools (hoodoos) and other interesting formations made from eroded layers of white and red sandstone. Hoodoos are formed by differential weathering. Hoodoos are formed when a hard capstone rock (, white sandstone) is layered on a softer layer of rock (, red sandstone). The softer rock is gradually worn away but the rock beneath the harder surface rock is protected.
