Height, 5i/4 inches. 4-i—Twelfth Century Carved Amber Picture of Sages by a ;\Ioi-NTAIN-SIDE In mottled red, dark mahogany-brown, dense opaque amber witha clear, transparent, nut-brown center which seen against thelight is a brilliant topaz with a ruby-red streak. Carved in anabundance of imagery- and virtuosity with bas-relief figures ofgenial and convivial sages in a mountain retreat, a stork flyingamong pine trees overhead—emblems of longevity. At the backof the mountain a fierce dragon with the fire-ball before himglowers upon a tiger, the king of the Chinese jungle, aboveleaping waves—symbolic of the eternal conflict between thesupernal powers of the air and the nnghtiest of the earth.
