If suddenly alarmed, the gill-covers of all were simultaneously closeddown, aud renuiined so during whatever rapid maneuvers followed. In this condi-tion it was very diflicult to follow their movements. Young salmon were feediugupon them at the time of our visit. In Unalaska Harbor they were present in greatnumbers the middle of June, but were not seen May 21, at the time of our first were very large and in excellent condition, and seemed superior to the samespecies when taken on the California coast. Five siiecinious from statioii 3318, taken off the coast of Califoruia near IoiutArena, Huuiboklt County, at a depth of fathoms. These are identical with thetypes of M. protociihin, and are in sufficiently good state of preservation to show thedivision of the luuiiuou-s spots, a character not visible in the types oi M. is obvious that the spots are divided into upper and lower halves, which arestructurally dilferent, the narrow pigment band indicating this separation on thesurface. The species is now known fiom the above locality, from Albatross station3072 (otf the coast of Washington, 584 fathoms), and from the mouths of Sebasiodescaught near San Diego, Cal. The specimens
