Alfred the Great Rebuilding the Walls of London. King Alfred the Great (849-899) reinstating the Roman walls around London. Alfred the Great reestablished English control of London in 886, renewing its fortifications. The old Roman walls were repaired and the defensive ditch was recut, the old Roman city becaming the main site of population.
