These threads areordinarily chased in a lathe, which insures this condi- tion, but a very simple and effective device makes itpossible to cut these threads in a double-headed stay-bolt cutter, in this way effecting a considerable savingin cost. Tapered dies are made for the bolt cutter ofthe required sizes, as shown in Fig. 3. The staybolt isplaced in the machine with the tapered shank in posi-tion for cutting in the dies, held in a simple chuck, shown by Fig. 4, having a cavity of the proper size tohold the square head of the staybolt, and rounded andtapered at that end to allow it to follow the stayboltinto the dies. This chuck is held in the vise of themachine, and the bolt forced into the dies, which areregulated in the usual manner for the proper diameterto fit the tapped holes. After the thread has been cut ^ Taper^zzz. d_D. ^ Fig. 3. /■£ Square /ron Fig. 4. on the tapered end of the bolt, it is placed in the vise, being held at about its middle with the straight shankin position for threading; the dies having been changedto the straight cutting form. Placing the bolt haphaz-ard in the vise will not insure making the threads fol-low, and consequently a gauge, as shown in Fig. 5,is used to accomplish this end. This gauge consistsof a block A, on a spindle B, held by a set screw. Theblock A is threaded the same as the staybolt, but thetaper is reversed to allow the threads to mesh withthose of the tapered end when in position. The shoul-der C is made to rest in the jaws of the vise whileholding the staybolt in position for cutting. The dis- <r D B
