The aqueduct was formally opened on 1797. It took five years to build and cost £48,000. It stands on wooden piles driven 20 feet into the river bed; it's 5 semi-circular arches each spanning 70 feet. The canal is 51 feet above the river and the whole structure is 664 feet (202m) long. Designed by John Rennie and built from local stone, it is considered to be one of the most beautiful aqueducts in the country and is a listed building.
