Richard of York, aka Richard Plantagenet (1411-1460) claimed the throne having won the Battle of Northampton and captured King Edward IV, whom they brought back to London. When York arrived in London and entered Parliament, he made for the empty throne as if to occupy it, but was intercepted by Thomas Bourchier, the Archbishop of Canterbury. Richard advanced his claim to the crown by hereditary right but narrow support among his peers led to failure. However, Parliament granted York extraordinary executive powers to protect the realm, and made him Lord Protector of England.
