(599° F.) it is a difficult matter to determine thespecific gravity at this temperature in the tropics, sincemoisture condenses on the outside of the apparatus Westphal balance can be used if the oil is coole<l to \y5,but the procedure is not convenient on account of moisturecondensation on the surface of the oil and the platinum wireattached to the plummet. A convenient and rapid methodin which the specific gravity is determined at the temper-ature of thf :ir and then calculated for specific gravity ° is outlined in detail, and the calculations of the sameexplained. Vol. XVI. No, 392. THE AGRICULTURAL NEWS 141. SUGAR-CANE EXPERIMENTS IN THE LEE-WARD ISLANDS, 1915-lG. The results of these experiments, coijductetl during theseason 1915-16, have just been issued by the ImperialDepartment of Agriculture for the West Indies, in the formof a report dealing (1) with experiments with varietiesof sugar-cane, and (2) with manurial experiments withsugar-cane. In regard to methods, the experimental workhas consisted of a continuation of that which has been inprogress for many years. Only the average results of thediflferent series of trials of each variety of sugar-cane aregiven in the report; but this information is quite sufficientfor general purposes, and as an indication of the generalsuitability in different parts of the Leeward Islands of onevariety over another. Copies of the detailed results from thevarious experiment stations are forwarded to the individualplanters in each district, while the completed records areopen for inspection at the offices of the agricultural depart-
