Elevated rice storage houses, Datang Village, Guizhou Province, China

Datang Miao Village, Guizhou Province, China, is the home to the Short Skirt Miao people. On the way to the village one passes by a series of old grain (rice) storage sheds built about a pond of water. The wooden pillars that support them stand on carved stone bases, which help to preserve them from rotting. Grains have to be stored within a fairly narrow range of temperature and humidity. Too low humidity will over dry the rice and humidity above the range will raise rice moisture to unsafe levels that cause mold growth. The Chinese evolved this system of rive storage centuries ago to keep the proper humidity conditions for storage and protect the rice from insect and pest (rodent) damage. The local domestic ducks seems to like the pond under the storage sheds.
