A flexible cord in thespeedometer connects with this front crossrod, the near end of the cross rod connect-ing with the gauge in the foreground, thisgauge indicating the speeds on the dialface. The speeds are also recorded graphic-ally by a stylograph pen attached to thecross rod. The pens on the rear cross rod are soadjusted as to give datums for the pull onthe far side of the paper, and for the speedon the near side of the paper. Both speed and pull are recorded on thepaper to a known scale, but in operation,as a double check, it is the practice tomark the pressure and speed indicated onthe indicating gauges on the paper at thesame time that the number of the milepost is marked opposite the datum points are also pencilled downon the paper, where the table observer notesany points in the traced curves that hewishes to record. Memoranda can also bewritten down in the margi
