His chief work isthe Atlas Ichthyologique des Indes OrientalesNeerlandaises, illustrated by colored writings of Dr. Bleeker constitute the chiefsource of our knowledge of the fauna of theEast Indies. Dr. Van Lidth de Jeude, of theUniversity of Leyden, is the author of a fewdescriptive papers on fishes. The fish fauna of Cuba has been the lifelongstudy of Dr. Felipe Poey y Aloy (1799-1891),a pupil of Cuvier, for a half century or morethe honored professor of zoology in the Univer-sity of Havana.
