Loc. cit., p. 135. 26 Development of the Ileo-ccecal Fossa. band of muscular fibres, which it sends upwards beyond theovary or testis in the plica vascularis. The latter fold is theupper part of the niesorectum or mesovarium, and has beendescribed under the name of plica vascularis, because it containsthe spermatic or ovarian vessels. The plica vascularis ends above upon either the vermi-form appendix, the mesentery, the caecum, or ileum. As itassists in pulling those organs towards the iliac fossa, the peri-toneum beneath the mesentery descends unequally, and thepart near the ileo-csecal junction remains behind. Hence, by. Fig. 5.—The Ileo-Ctecal Fossa. The arrow indicates the entrance to thisperitoneal pouch. In the illustration the vermiform appendix is represented asherniated into this ileo-coecal fossa. (Lockwood and Rolleston.) C. Cascum. I. Ileum. the time the caecum and right colon have assumed their per-manent position, a recess has been created, which is the ileo-caecal fossa. Another factor in the process is the substitutionof the permanent ascending meso-colon for the original one, which, as we have already said, is part of the mesentery. Thereason for the incomplete descent of the peritoneum whichforms the ileo-csecal fossa is obscure. The explanation, probably, turns upon the action of theblood vessels and suspensory muscle of the mesentery in Superior and Inferior Ileo-ccecal Fossce. 27 restraining the movements of the peritoneum at the anglebetween the ileum and colon, this being the portion of serousmembrane which, by its occ
