Lightning detector. This is a CIGRE (Conference Internationale des Grandes Reseaux Electriques) detector, operated by CESI (Italian Experimental Electrotechnical Centre), based in Milan, Italy. It detects the low-frequency radio waves formed by a lightning strike. This detector operates in the 10 kHz (kilo-Hertz) range and can detect lightning strikes in a range of about 45 kilometres, though it cannot pinpoint the precise location of the strike. A network of such detectors can record lightning data such as the number of strikes per year and per unit area. The CESI lightning detector network, SIRF (Sistema Italiano Rilevamento Fulmini), was formed in 1994.
