Memorial to Commando No4, Overlord, Benouville, Normandy
The 1st Battalion of the Fusiliers Marins Commando (part of 4 Commando) assaulted Benouville during 6th June 1944 in an action to join with the 6th Airborne Division and hold the Bridges over the Orne Canal. They were led by Commander Philippe Kieffer, Military Cross, Legion d'Honneur and Croix de Guerre. Kieffer survived the War but died in 1962. This memorial to the 177 Free French men involved was set up on 6th June 2018 in the presence of veteran Leon Gautier.
