The rose-flowered Cistusvaginatus was growing plentifully at this elevation, butwas not found above ; it is rather a flower of the MonteVerde Zone. Many hundreds of acres in Tenerife arecovered with the two fodder-plants, the natives living inthe villages along the north-western slopes making longjourneys to obtain sufficient for their needs. Thereseem to be no restrictions as to the amount which canbe cut, and in the evening whole families—men, women,and children—wend their way down the steep, exceed-ingly bad, mountain-paths, carryi
