Nicolas Beatrizet. Joseph of Arimathea. 1545–1560. France. Engraving on ivory laid paper Beatrizet spent most of his working life in Italy. While in Rome, he specialized in reproducing Italian paintings and views of Rome. At this time, he also studied the techniques and style of Michelangelo (Italian, 1475-1564). The fine and tight crosshatching on the body of the hooded man seen here is reminiscent of Michelangelo’s drawing style, which was textured with such vigorous crosshatchng that it often resembled marks left by chisels on stone.
