Man, appropriately attired, visiting the 'Grateful Dead House' at 710 Ashbury St. is perhaps the most famous residence in the district. Home to native San Franciscan Jerry Garcia who, along with Grateful Dead band members lived here in the 1960s at the peak of the group's fame. It was the site of a police raid on Oct. 2, 1967 when Grateful Dead's guitarist and song writer Bob Weir and10 other residents were arrested for drug use. Though Jerry Garcia was not among those arrested it was reported that he was hiding out in a neighboring home. The house remains a major attractions to 'Dead Heads' and followers of the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia and other band members who travel to see the place where the band hung out in the 60s. There is a tree in front of the house where visitors carve their initials or leave other carvings to signify their visits.
