CHAPTER VIII rembrandt s growing success as a portrait-painter—portraits painted in1632 and 1633— the ship-builder and his wife—martin daey and hiswife—compositions of this period :— st. peters boat in the storm ; thephilosophers—Rembrandts relations with huygens—the series of pic-tures ON THE PASSION PAINTED FOR PRINCE FREDERICK T ^HE success of the Anatomy Lesson wasbrilliant. Rembrandts name, alreadywell-known in Amsterdam, now becamefamous. His rank among the first livingpainters was assured, and commissions flowedin rapidly. As Dr. Bode has remarked,1,whereas in 1631 he painted only two or threeportraits besides the studies of himself and hisfamily, in 1632 he had ten in hand, and from1632 to 1634 at least forty. His mannerbecame broader, though he abated nothing of the sincerity andconscientious care that had made his reputation. He enlarged, without substantially altering his style. The execution of his firstlarge canvas had made him sensible of certain deficiencies in freedomand breadth of conception and vigour of drawing. 1 Studien, p. 399. FIGURE OF A POLANDER. About 1633 (B. 140). 138 REMBRANDT Taking his works in chronological order, we find several youngcouples among the painters clients. Occasionally the two portraits, though painted to form a pair, are separated from each other by sometwelve month
