A landscape view of the Stonehenge trilithons silhouetted after sunset. Wiltshire, England

Prehistoric ritual complex, early 4th to late 3rd millennium BC. This photo shows the iconic stones at the centre of the henge; an outer circle of huge Sarsen standing stones, some of which are still topped by lintels, and at least one of the inner trilithons (a pair of uprights with a lintel across each) made of even bigger stones. They are silouetted against a red and purpe sky after sunset. These, and other smaller stones which form part of the complex, were positioned to mark the rising and setting of the sun and moon at different times of the year. The surrounding ditch is not visible in the darkness. Legend credits Merlin's magic with moving the stones and building the circle.
