In hard weather wild swanshaunt the quiet river, and geese, widgeon, and duck of all kinds are foundin numbers, which recall the days of Colonel Hawker, the father ofwild-fowling, whose exploits on the Solent in pursuit of his favouritesport formed one of the earliest and best of British books on wild flamingo which was shot on the river, and is now stuffed at PalaceHouse, was clearly a wild bird ; its delicate white and pink feathers are. ?> Mil .fI, dik SfJ ^ 1° THE NEW FOREST in perfect condition, free from any break or soiling, which is the certainmark of captivity in wild-fowl. Ospreys visit the river to feed on themullet, trout, and salmon peel ; and on the heaths beyond black-gameare still found. It is said that these are gradually decreasing all over theforest, partly from the number of foxes, partly owing to the ravages ofthe oologists.
