Forkiiiy, Italian Sculptois, p. 251, says that tlie nationality ofWilit^clmus has been much disputeil. XI.] THE CATHEDRAL. 305 shafts resting on lions backs. Tlie upper part of the porchwas altered in order that a great wheel window might beinserted, sometime in the foiirteentli century. This rose window fills the whole upper part of thewestern gable, and is, like many Italian examples, veryunskilful in its design. The vast number of divisions orspokes, and the very slight prominence of the arcuated partof the filling-in, make it look in very truth a wheel windowand nothing better. Above it are an insignificant figure ofOur Lord and the Emblems of the four Evangelists sculpturedin low relief. The lower portion of the walls is covered in? the most promiscuous manner with bas-reliefs, and a medleyof mural tablets, the number of which would delight theeyes of an English parish clerk; but nevertheless the richcharacter given to the work by the fine shadows of thearcades in the lower half of the front,
