The chrysanthemum has again come into its own and is rightly not only queen of the autumn, but queen of the market. Quantities are coming into the retail stores, of good quality, and every show window and available display cor- ner is filled with choice blooms, which bringi from 10 cents to 50 cents apiece at retail. Prices at wholesale range about normal. Various Notes. The monthly meeting of the Florists' and Gardeners' Club of Rhode Island was held at the rooms of the associa- tion, 98 Westminster street, October 21, with a fair attendance. In the absence of President Eugene Appleton, Vice- president Cornelius Hartstra occupied the chair. It had been expected that William Hill would read a paper on orchids, but in his absence a general discussion ensued regarding the Work- ingmen's Compensation Act, passed by the last General Assembly. The monthly meeting of the Newport Horticultural Society, held October 22, with President Andrew S. Meikle in the chair, was one of the best in a long time. A fine exhibition of chrysanthe- mums was made by Andrew J. Dorward, gardener for Mrs. T. J. Emery. The plants had been grown in pots in the open and moved inside after the buds had developed,
