Woman with vintage pram looking at Tom Hatlestad's outdoor Freedom exhibition on Oslo Harbour, Central Oslo, Norway.

Starting from Norway and the Nordic countries, Tom continued onward through Eastern Europe, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India and Nepal. He had travelled 17 countries and shot about 80 portraits. An edited version of the photographic expedition will be on display at 'Chobi Mela V'. Interestingly, most of the countries on Tom's travel agenda have a history of wars and occupations, and undoubtedly the people living in these countries had different opinions and understandings of the word 'freedom'. The 'Freedom Track' project was undertaken by the artist with a view to conduct a photo documentary on the journey by road from Oslo to Dhaka, in connection with 'Chobi Mela V', Asia's largest and one of the most prominent photography festivals in the world, starting from January 30, 2009. During his journey Tom has recorded the perceptions on freedom from subjects belonging to all classes and creeds in their own writing. The writings along with their portraits will be featured through an exhibition.
