Doelen Hotel, Amsterdam. Cupola with clock and figures of militiamen. Built in 1883 by van Hamersveld, in Neo-Renaissance style.

Doelen Hotel, Amsterdam. Built on the site of the former Kloveniersdolen, a building complex in Amsterdam, the headquarters and training ground for local militias, including the Kloveniers. It was here that Rembrandt painted the Night Watch, featuring one of these militias. In 1883 the hotel was radically redeveloped and the present hotel was built, to a design by the architect van Hamersveld, in neo-Renaissance style. Detail: below the cupla, flanking the clock are two giant figures of militiamen in their seventeenth century uniforms. They have lost their guns.
