Spitfire Mk XIX PM 631 follows Hurricane PZ865 in mock Dog fight at Farnborough International Airshow 2006 on Friday 21st July

The Spitfire is powered by the 5 bladed Rolls Royce Griffon 66 engine that replaced the 3 bladed propeller of the Merlin engine reveered by veterans and enthusiasts for its sound. Built November 1945 for high altitude photo reconnaissance with pressurised cockpit PM631. Received by the RAF 1946 just missing operational service in WWII used by 203 Advanced Flying School May 1949 then modified for meteorological work PM 631 now has 49 years served with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight or BBMF. Painted here as an early PRXIX of 541 Squadron for high altitude unarmed reconnaissance European missions from early 1944 onwards Mk XIX Spitfires were the last versions. Max speed 446 mph at 26000 feet 15 minutes 30 seconds to 35000 ft with ceiling 42000 ft Max range 1500 miles. Hurricane PZ865 is one of only two type IICs still flying in Britain operated by the Royal Air Force s BBMF from Coningsby this is the last Hurricane ever built and inscribed The Last of the Many . Painted here as Karel Kuttelwascher s Night Reaper which was BE581 with four 20 mm cannon French Hispano Suiza HS 404 guns producing 600 to 650 rounds per minute and nine seconds of firing . Painted black underneath only glowing red hot exhaust manifolds visible in darkness . 60 gallons per hour at cruising speed of 170 mph giving 900 miles range with the 28 gallon tank extendable by fuel pods . Designer Sydney Cam in 1934 a prototype first flew on the 6 November 1935. 14533 Hurricanes were built at Langley in 1944
