Inhabited at least since the late Roman period, the site of Tintagel Castle became famous in the 12th century, when Geoffrey of Monmouth named it as the place where King Arthur was conceived. Richard, Earl of Cornwall, decided to site his castle in Tintagel in the 1230’s.
