Meantime,within the recess areplaced three detachedstones, probably partsof tombstones, bear-ing arms but withoutinscriptions. (1) Ashield bearing () :—A fess chargedwith two buckles be-tween a lion headerased in chief and astar in base (King),imjxiling, A lion ram-pant within a bordurecharged with (eight ?)roses (Dunbar). (2) Armsattires a star. Fig. 28.—Shield of Arms in the Chancel. -A stag head cabossed, between theAbove the shield a helmet with mantling and wreathbut no crest, over that the motto coelum fide cerko (By faith I discern heaven), and at foot the initials M ~ and M M This stone refers to Murdo Mackenzie, Bishop of Moray, who was consecrated in1662, and translated to Orkney in 1677. And the inscription accord-ing to Monteith was :— Here rests the corps of Margaret McAulay,dearest spouse to Murdoch by the mercy of God late Bishop of Moray,now Bishop of Orkney, who died in May 1676. Also the body ofDavid Mackenzie, youngest son to the said Bishop. Therefore this 86 ELGIN PAST AND PRESENT monument is erected by the surviving to their pious and acceptablememory/ (3) Shield bearing :—On a chevron three stars. The three steps up to the High Altar remain in situ.
