. A history of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight . er Eldon in the 18th century,272 andis now the property of Mr. George Hennessy. The church of ST. PETER andCHURCHES ST. PAUL, KINGS SOMBORNE,consists of a chancel 35 ft. 6 in. by16 ft. 8 in., nave 54ft. 6 in. by 16 ft., north and its south wall, and slightly widened northwards, becoming out of centre with the nave, while the13th-century chancel arch remained central as date of the addition of the north aisle is un-certain, for the arcade is now all modern, and theillustrations of the interior previous to its restorationshow an arcade of two irregular bays and of uncertaindate. Such old work as remains in it points to the 14thcentury, and it seems that at this time both aisleswere extended eastwards to form chapels flanking thechancel, the arches to the chancel being pierced atthe same time. The building was extensively restored in 1886,the chancel arch, north arcade, part of the southarcade and nearly all the west end of the navebelonging to this date. The east window of the. King9 Somborne Church : Interior Looking West south aisles 9 ft. 6 in. and 7 ft. 10 in. wide respec-tively, continued eastwards to form chapels, largewestern bell turret and north porch. The pre-sent nave appears to represent the nave of a 12th-century church, which at that date had a smallchancel. In the 13th century a south aisle wasadded, and the chancel may then have been rebuiltoutside the lines of the older chancel. In the secondquarter of the 14th century it seems to have beenagain rebuilt with the exception of the west part of chancel dates from c. 1330 and consists of threetrefoiled lights with net tracery; the jambs andmullions have sunk chamfers. Below the windowis a square-headed recess formerly fitted with a shelfand a door, and on either side are plain corbels forimages. In the north wall is a restored trefoiled light anda square-headed window with two trefoiled lights, both of 14th-century date, and at the west is a de-pre
