Brussels Smog Warning: A pollution peak of level 1 smog alert was announced for Thursday 24 and Friday 25 January 2013, in the capital of Belgium, Brussels. Speed limits were reduced to 90 km/h on the motorways and 50km/h in the city, in an attempt to curb emissions from cars. People who are particularly sensitive to air pollution: young children, elderly, people with heart disease etc. are recommended to avoid unusual physical effort. The cold weather, plus the lack of wind, has been blamed for the excessive smog - and of course, Brussels' ongoing heavy traffic problems. High concentrations of particulate matter and nitrogen oxide have been measured.
