The bending of the screw spikes observedin thii case was at first thought to be due to the lack of support of the head ofthe spikes on the far side from the rail flange, and. to remedy this supposeddefect, rail clips were introduced, giving the head of spikes a full support all SUPPORTS OF THE RAIL 135 around (Fig. 100 a). This arrangement proved to be much better than anyprevious one, but still did not produce a satisfactory fastening.
