In the centre of the supporting board is a large opening for the diaphragmtube, for use in radioscopy. There is also a receptacle for small cross-shapedlead labels, backed with plaster, which can easily be attached to any portionof the skin. For radiography in a reclining position the fixation board may bedetached from the framework. As it weighs only 40 pounds, it can easilybe carried by one person, and placed on the X-ray table or ambulance. The framework is G feet high, and is mounted on castors. It is providedwith a small wooden frame with counterpoises, which is easily adjustable bymeans of a hand-wheel at the back. This carries the fixation board andclamps, and the guide rails for the tube-box and fluorescent Fig. 76.—A useful IV 4 >f universal exam:(Siemens.) This combines nearly all the movements that arenecessary lor a complete examination, and is efficiently protected. USES OF THE UNIVERSAL STAND 75 For radiography of the stomach, the fixation board may be broughtforward in an inclined position by means of two hinged wooden flaps. The tube-box travels along the guide rails by means of an endless screw, and can be moved vertically as well as horizontally. The trolley whichcarries the spindle is locked in the central position by a spring, thus givingat once the position in which the focus of the tube and the normal ray are inline with the centre line of the fixation board, and therefore with the axisof the patients body. The guide rails are graduated so as to give the exactdistance of the focus from the plate. The tube is centred once for all bymeans of an adjustment tube attached to the diaphragm. It is supportedin its woo
