Grey sky portrait Two Cylinder Crossley Engine standing pavement at MOSI Power Hall, Lower Byrom Street, Manchester, UK
Two Cylinder Crossley Engine on the pavement outside the Museum of Science and Industry Power hall, Lower Byrom Street, Manchester. The information board reads: 'To obtain more power and a smoother running engine, it was common practice to use two or more engines and connect them with one crankshaft. By this means more working strokes per revolution are obtained, giving a steadier output speed. This is necessary when driving electric generators, as this engine did, which in turn gives a steady output voltage - so avoiding vibrations in power and lighting levels. Originally used a gas engine and driven by gas made from sawdust. This engine was later converted to use diesel fuel, It remained in service until the 1970s. Presented by Crossley Brothers, Timber Merchants, Blackpool.'
