Francis Marion (c. 1732-1795) was an American partisan leader in the American Revolution (1775-1783). He organized a cavalry group in 1780 that conducted guerilla warfare against the British in South Carolina. This 1876 engraving shows Marion and officer Lee preparing the attack on Fort Watson, a strong fortification on the east bank of the Santee River, about 50 miles north of Charleston, South Carolina.
