Marshy Carboniferous Forest

Ideal view of a marshy forest of the Coal Period, from Louis Figuier's The World Before the Deluge, 1867 American edition. On the right are Lepidodendron and Sigillaria trees, with an arborescent fern rising between them. On the left are another Sigillaria, a Sphenophyllum and a conifer. Other visible plants are Calamites, Asterophyllites and herbaceous ferns. A few fish and the primitive amphibian Archegosaurus are in the water.
