Waverley Abbey was the first Cistercian house in England, founded 1128 by Bishop Gifford of Winchester. The abbey was Dissolved in 1536, the standing remains are mostly C13th. The monks of Waverley gave food & shelter to pilgrims travelling between Winchester & Canterbury on the Pilgrims' Way.
