River Torridge View from Under the Old Railway Bridge at Beam Weir with Brick Detail. The Tarka Trail Now Passes Over It.

Detail of the underside of an old railway bridge beside Beam Weir, near Great Torrington. This bridge is a great vantage point to watch out for otters in the River Torridge. It dates back to the original railway system, built in the 1870’s, which ran from Barnstaple to Bideford and on through Torrington to the Clay Quarries at Meeth. This system was in use until it was cheaper to transport the clay to Bideford dock by lorry. The line fell into disrepair but has now been transformed into the popular Tarka Trail.
