The first day of Songkran, the Thai New Year, started with a massive water fight in Chiang Mai, which will last for three days. The tradition comes from pouring a small amount of water on a statue of Buddha, or monks, to receive a blessing in return. The first day of Songkran, the Thai New Year, started with a massive water fight in Chiang Mai, which will last for three days. The tradition comes from pouring a small amount of water on a statue of Buddha, or monks, to receive a blessing in return. Now the blessings flow freely and rather than a small sprinkle of water, can be administered by hose, bucket of even super soaker water pistols. The traditional blessings were also administered during a parade through the city where buddha statues from many of the local temples were doused in water, as were local monks.
