Ultrasound in pregnancy. Woman's abdomen in early pregnancy receives an ultrasound scan to monitor foetal development. A doctor's hand moves a handheld transducer over the woman's lubricated skin, while a two-dimensional image of the foetus can be seen on the background screen. The foetal head appears rounded at right on screen, with the spinal column and torso also seen. Ultrasound scanning is a diagnostic technique which uses high-frequency sound waves. In pregnancy it is performed to detect foetal disorders, and it helps establish foetal size and healthy development and hence the expected delivery date. The technique is painless and safe.
