Clay divides sand fromsand, and forms a broken and beautiful tract ofcountry. Here the Southern Highland has itssteepest escarpment, and the waters, drainingrapidly down to fall against the impervious clay,have given rise to many marshy tracts. Marsh. « Green WealdSand Clay is frequent in the lowlands, and generally marksthis junction of sand and clay, and the steepnessof slope from one to the other causes the waterto lie more or less in a basin. The most extensive view is obtained fromBlackdown, the highest point looking south. Theline of the South Downs, with ChanctonburyRing well in view, closes the distance, with—on GEOGRAPHICAL INFLUENCE OF GEOLOGY 9 rare occasions when the atmosphere is particu-larly clear—a glimpse of sea. Blackdown itself isover the boundary, and so is in the county ofSussex. To the west the three counties ofHampshire, Surrey, and Sussex meet in HammerBottom. Westwards there is not the abrupt transitionthat characterizes the eastward view.
