The Establishment of Isaiah Spindell & Co. pHE tlrm of Isaiah Spindell & Co., wholesale and retail fish dealers, wasformed in April, 1874, to meet the demand for disposing of the fish thatwere caught by the fish pounds in Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound, whichare packed in ice and forwarded to the large cities to the extent of severalthousand barrels a year. There are a great variety of fish taken, includingspecimens never known to be caught except in pounds. These facilities forsecuring and studying the habits of fish influenced the establishment of theUnited States Fish Commission at Woods Holl, the land for which wasdeeded to trustees for the purpose by the firm. The facilities afforded bythe Fish Commission, Isaiah Spindell & Co., and the pounds, were themeans of establishing the Massachusetts Biological Institute at the same capital of the firm has been increased from year to year, until it hasreached the sum of $21,000. 160
