Ladder-backed Woodpecker Picoides scalaris (Wagler) Status: The Ladder-backed Woodpecker is an uncommon resident of southwestern Kansas, where it has been recorded from Hamilton, Morton, and Clark counties. It has been recorded nesting only in Morton County. Tordoff (1956) considered this to be a common bird and listed six specimens, all from Morton County. This bird seems to be increasing in num- bers along the Cimarron River. Period of Occurrence: The species is a resident. Breeding: There are recent breeding records for Morton County along the Cimarron River. Johnston (1964) did not report it as a breeding bird for Kansas. Ely saw a male leaving a nesting cavity along the Cimarron River in Morton County on 3 June 1968. Adult birds were seen going in and out of a presumed nesting cavity in a Black Willow (Salix niger) near the same area in May 1984. The woodpecker lays from two to six white eggs, and the incubation period is about 13 days (Johnsgard 1979). They probably remain in the nest from 18 to 25 days, but little is known about the fledging period. Additional.
