A dark forest in Ireland, the wet soil is covered with green moss. A small well rises at the bottom right

Sphagnum moss, botanical name Sphagnum, is a genus of mosses with over a hundred different species. This small plant grows in the peat that rises above the water. It grows at the top on top of its own dead remains. Thus it forms an important part of the raised bog.
