George Boole. Coloured portrait of George Boole (1815- 1864), English mathematician. The algebra of logic he developed, Boolean algebra, is basic to the design of modern digital computer circuits. He was given his first lessons in mathematics by his father, a tradesman, and attended local schools for a few years. Apart from this, Boole was a self- taught mathematician. He worked as a school teacher for several years. During this time he submitted several papers including the pamphlet Mathematical Analysis of Logic(1847). In 1849, although he had no university degree, Boole was appointed professor of mathematics at Queen College, Cork, Ireland.
