It was in this last term that Governor Tanner of theState of Illinois and the Board of Trade cameinto conflict. The Governor had made a gooddeal of money on the Board of^Trade- throughsome of his brokers, which fact he did not deplore,but he did hold resentment against the Boardof Trade for an attack made upon him in connec-tion with standing in with the crooked elementand vetoing certain legislation which the Board 146 LIFE OF WILLIAM TAYLOR BAKER. I retort, that if Mr. Baker orany of his friends so desire I can give proof, facts andfigures to substantiate what I said, and now empha-size in that respect. The Governors tirade was em-bodied in a personal attack upon Father as the officialhead of the organization. It resulted in an amusingcartoon being published of Chicagos Temple of Com-merce which is interesting enough to be reproducedin this book. The y
