Moutan, the parent species, is a native of Chi- na. The varieties are handsome flowering- shrubs, attaining from 6 to 8 feet in height in about ten years, with proper care. The flowers are remark- ably striking, of gorgeous colors, very numerous, and enormous in size, often measuring 6 to 9 in- ches across, and appearing in May. All are very effective amongst shrubs, or on the margins of borders. Although hardy, the plants are greatly improved by a slight protection in tree p^ony. alba plena.
